leaking head gasket
well I found out where my antifreeze is going.... crap
it's not leaking too much, I think I am going to try Bar's leaks. Anyone go this route before?
EDIT: forget it, I'm not doing bar's leaks, gonna fix 'er right or die trying lol
Reason why I think it is the head gasket: Slowly leaking coolant, and now I see some nasty yellow crap on the inside of the oil filler tube and cap. Antifreeze in the rad and overflow bottle looks clean, and the oil on the dipstick looks normal, although the oil level is dropping too. gah

Re: leaking head gasket
I have no experience working on an X head gasket. Let me know if you want help. I can drop tools and drink your beer quite efficiently.

Re: leaking head gasket
I just did mine last spring over the weekend. It was al lot of FUN. Since I was always on top of the maintenance and any other problems occurring, parts alone costed me $200.00 Just gaskets alone. The time is the issue. I did a head gasket at work on a 2001 X. By the time I reached the short block this customer needed a lot of parts. From manifolds to a camshaft that had a crack near the locating pin for the cam gear. In the end it costed the guy almost $4000.00. I wouldn't try to put stop leak because it might cause blockages in your heater core or poor coolant flow through the rad.. Eventually you are gonna have to go in and fix it the right way.
The crap you see could be just moisture mixing with the oil. This being caused by the motor not warming up fully and shutting the motor down before the moisture evaporates. Moisture will trickle down to the bottom eventually.

Re: leaking head gasket
I am holding out hope that this is what it is... being ten minutes away from work and with the colder weather this seems like a good explanation. But, I am still losing coolant somewhere which makes me worried about it. I'm going to take it to a shop on monday and see what they can find. I would actually love to tackle this myself, as there are several issues that need to be addressed at the same time, but just don't have the time right now and being sans garage, it's pretty much out of the question unless it can hold off a few months. It would probably take me a really long time anyway, I seem do take much longer than anticipated every time I work on it lolBig Bird wrote: The crap you see could be just moisture mixing with the oil. Thanks
Thanks for the offer Bow_tied, maybe we could just swap in a LS series?

Re: leaking head gasket
Maybe you have a leak at that wax thermo whatever its called that leaks on the 3.3L nissans. Someone who knows where it is and what its' called will know more than I do just that I do know it's not the most obvious thing.

Re: leaking head gasket
That would be on the throttle body. Coolant would be visible under the intake.

Re: leaking head gasket
Also check from the back of the motor from the head gaskets and from the lower intake plenum.

Re: leaking head gasket
I've been reading an old XOC post saying you can fix this with a $2 o-ring from the hardware store. Still need to look more into it and check other areas for leaks

Re: leaking head gasket
To me I find that leak very minor. You might have to change that cold start valve. It might be seized. If you do end up changing the coolant, drain it from the block not from the rad.
