I've been in this board for a while now, and know a lot of the kids in the schools. And they know me. So there's generally a pretty relaxed atmosphere that happens when I show up, and the kids can just be themselves. And sometimes they come up with hilarious stuff.

This is the one today. I'm in resource/special ed. which is normally a pretty easy-going room to chat about things. And one of the girls in there, who is black, says to me: "You know, I have a Jewish boyfriend, and do you know what we would have if we had a kid?"

I looked at her, sighing a bit, and asked, "OK, I give up, what?"

She said, "A kid who has to sit at the back of the oven."

I almost fell off my chair. Absolutely priceless.

I have to start writing this stuff down for when I retire and can publish a book.

That has to be one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. I love it when people have a sense of humour about themselves, whether regarding race, sex, or otherwise.

Unfortunately, we all have to be very careful. Not everyone is comfortable in her/his own skin.

But, DAMN...if we can't laugh both with and at each other AND be okay with it, what' is the point? ... of anything?

For example, I "know" that Eddie Murphy's White Man's Overbite monologue is based upon a very rare sighting of me trying to dance to a song that was not of the hug-your-girl-and-move-in-a-circle variety.

I strongly doubt that. This kid just has a great sense of humour, and her knowledge on the history of oppression is obviously pretty good.

Point taken. I doubt anyone in my family tree has ever been imprisoned, tortured, killed, or persecuted in any other significant way on account of a lack of ability to "shake their booty".

It would be interesting to see the results of relevant research that was done by respected sociologists and published in respected, peer-reviewed journals. How many generations after (the bulk of the) persecution is the newest generation of such a group not significantly different (in certain ways) from a control group? Obviously we all need to remember the lessons of history, and some lessons will be more powerful for some than for others, but when do things start to smooth out somewhat?
