Has anyone here ever built their trucks for long term adventure travel? Expedition Travel? Overland Travel?

Or are most drivers here weekend warriors ( ) haha and for the most part hit the weekend runs up north?

No judgement, just curious.

Personally, I build for expedition long term adventure travel, and I have received support in the past for adventure travel to support charity.

What is the difference in the set up?

I'd love to, but then realize Monday is when hell begins again. Weekend nutcase here.

Have begun to think of such expeditions.

been working on it adding stuff to make it more comfortable for long term stays in the truck also adding things like dual alternators dual batterys going to be adding a air tank with oba one thats powerful enough to run air tools for on site repairs other things like that

It was in the parking lot at the zoo yesterday...first vehicle in a while that has turned me back into a little kid.

...and yeah, I'm more focused on 2 wheeled "adventure travel" these days, but it would be great to build up something on 4 wheels that wasn't just a weekend warrior.

The differences between trail riding and Overlanding are quite vast.

Trail riding usually consists of a quick day or afternoon or weekend away, not always, but mostly. The trucks are usually built to handle rocks and mud for quick thrills, which usually mean huge heavy tires, tall soft suspension, and heavy guage winches and lights to handle getting things unstuck.

Although sounding similar, Overlanding is mostly a vehicle based expedition over an extended period time, usually longer than a week for the express purpose of personal challenge and adventure travel to far off unnown places.

Overlanding vehicles, whether motorcycle, SUV, Truck, are usually built to handle long mileage on and off road, mostly MT tires of a reasonable size, suspension is usually heavy duty and minimal in lift to allow for better fuel efficiency. Storage solutions for long exposure to allow dependancy.

Expeditions are usually long term, and there for, although being a skilled driver and capable of handling mud and rocks, obstacles are AVOIDED if possible. Breakage 900 miles from anywhere, and calling a tow truck is impossible, is a VERY VERY VERY bad thing. The mentality is, that there are no badges of honour or disgrace for flying through a deep pool of mud or bed of rocks.

To trail ride, you enjoy offroading.

To overland, you enjoy endless offroading for weeks on end, possibly without seeing an inch of pavement or running water.

Nothing wrong with trail riding at all, so don't get all nutso about how I'm being and elitist!!! .

I think you will find 99.9% here are weekenders. While there may be many here would love to go on extended rides or expeditions they simply don't pursue it as it requires a significantly greater dedication of resources. I would love to go on a 3 week excursion through Alaska, love it!!! But the reality check is that I could actually get that much time away from my life once every 5 years and so building a dedicated expedition rig is a rediculous investment for the frequency of use, for me.

bought a nissan will run for ever so long trips check mild lift check, avoiding obstacles not checked i have a bad habit of taking the hardest route possible, i would like to do a desert run one day

And that's what I like to see!

Mild, not over the top mods, and drivers who can take care of the tough stuff just as good as a guy with massive mods, a true sign of a good driver.

To me it proves how good and technical a driver can be if they can tackle the heavy stuff with minimal modification and little to no damage on their vehicles and to the environment.

Well, awesome guys, nothing wrong with the time and cash restraints that most everyone has and sticking to weekend trips at all. I have been on only a small handful of expedition style trips, some supported, but most unsupported, difference is, we call the weekend trips we take "Training Runs" haha.

Good to get some feed back guys, and I liked the photo post, and would love to see some more of your trucks.

I'll make a new thread tonight with a brief story and some photos of our old truck we took to the Continental Divide in Monatana and then to the peaks of the LaSalle Mountains in Utah near Moab.

Yes at $130 it's expensive but taking Tom's advice of choosing cloth seats over leather seats alone pays for the book! plus it is chock full of other information, how to best load a vehicle for weight distribution, clothing, tents, maintenance kits etc etc. Since he's a brit, it does have a lot of Landrover reference, but it as well has it's share of Toyota, Nissan, and Jeep as well.
They won't last long and once they sell, then you are at the whim of ebay where these go for $400. In fact this edition was released by Tom due to the ridiculous prices on ebay.

I've always wanted to, maybe one day...
