Re: What did you do to your rig today?
ordered new centre link and both inner/outter tie rod assemblies this morning.
I'll contemplate the heavy duty steering system over the winter and decide by the spring... it needs to be done, it's just a matter of $$$

Good point about carrying a spare Steelcityslicker. BTW do you know Clause Wagner?
I hope the new parts don't set you back too much Mike. The damage looks scarey.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
The damage isn't scary. It's normal on the trail. The first time I wheeled the X with a stock centre link, I was about 50' (yes, fifty feet) into the trail when it went all fubared. It's weird, for sure, and I felt like a complete heel on my first run with the club. But not scary. And it would never happen on the highway.
I am pretty sure that Mike is (was) still running a stock CL and TRAs. The CL is bad enough, with that ball joint. The TRAs are tiny. Hold your little finger out. Look at it. That is the size of the stock TRA.
Mike is running a stock CL. He's been told over and over to dump that POS off the truck... Last time it broke we had a spare tie rod for him. Not this time.
There are still a few other issues with the steering after upgrade (the primary one for me is the very long distance from the PA the IA. It allows for torque build up from one side to the other) but it does get better with a little enhancement.
Not picking on you, Mike. Not at all. Just alerting others to why it happened. You'll get it all fixed up the way you want, and then you can sit around the fire and tell great stories about what you did to make it work (just like I do.)
Scott
P.S. But do note the IFS did not fail. It was the stock steering.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
Scotto, you can suck it too.... ha, just kidding.
I had a complete spare tie rod assembly... doesn't help when you forget it on your desk at work....
Yes, everything is completely stock, CL, TRE's, etc..
I wish I knew someone that was really good at fabricating stuff, and could work on mocking up a stronger centrelink that uses special bushings, and bolts... too bad I don't know anyone like that....
Turns out I bent the other side too, and there looked to be some play in the idler arm too, so I replaced everything. Stayed after work today, took about 2 hours to replace the complete steering system, do an alignment and service the front brakes.
Part of my procrastination with the front end is
1) I can get the stock parts really cheap.. duh...
2) no one has really made a really strong steering system for the X yet
so I find it difficult to justify spending $500-$1000 on a setup that I'd still not be happy with, that's why I'm still contemplating the king kong heim joint system...
The upper control arm bushings have a little bit of play in them, but I doubt that's from this weekend... I was having difficulty setting the camber angles on my last alignment, they were probably already worn at that point.
Anyways, trucks back on the road with stock parts again.. The steering is right at the top of the mod list now, and a decision will be made and implimented before the spring wheeling season starts.. I'm getting tired of breaking stuff every time I go out...

Mike, glad you got it all buttoned up again. I say keep what you have until you save up the cash for the king kong
system or whichever one you'll be most happy with.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
A note to anyone with an 00-04 X with a body lift
Check your heater hoses where they go into your heater core. I found one of mine rubbing against the transmission dipstick. It left a mark in the hose. Not bad enough for me to worry about, but if left long enough, it would rub a hole right in the hose and cause a coolant leak.
One zip tie solved the problem.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
Looking forward to hearing how you liked them over the winter and in the spring.
Thanks for the tip Mike. I suspect this affects frontiers as well (with BL once it's installed).

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
Dropped it off to get the tires checked out, and they just called me back saying it's ready. If I had waited there, it would have taken hours lol. Turns out I had a defective tire.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
Picked up a full set of Firestone Destination MTs 33"x12.5" (with about >80% left on them) for $500-. That price includes a nice new set of 15" steel rims. With a 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern! From a Jeep guy! Jeeps have a 5 bolt... Confusing, I know. So now I have a pretty much new set of boots for the summer, and I'm moving the ProComp winters over to the Xterra from the Jeep. The unbalancable Truxus things are going to move over to the Jeep, where they can die a slow and painful death. Confused yet? I am.
Anyone ever tried running the Destinations in the winter? My bet is they would be suicidal. But out of idle curiousity, I thought I'd ask.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
I believe Drew ran them a couple of winters. He didn't seem to think they were bad, but has since gone back to Revo's for winter driving.
Personally, with no siping, I'd avoid them.

Re: What did you do to your rig today?
I remember Drew running them - but he drives about 10 mins to work, and then back. In Toronto. Not much to go on with that. And, like you, I'd be very hesitant - or happy with a death-wish - to run them up here where it actually snows.Simon wrote:I believe Drew ran them a couple of winters. The double posts are probably due to those of us posting using our smart(ass) phones. Probably double clicking when there is no reaction after the first click of the submit button...or some of us are just twitchy.
