whining noise.

Post by PiDGE »

Before I installed the new battery the other night there was a whining noise while in reverse, after I installed the new battery pooof its gone. I dont know what the problem could be except pehaps the altenator. I do have fog lights tied into the reverse light via a relay for backing up Image I noticed when backing up and feathering the clutch the lights would get brighter and when the rpm's droped they would do the opposite which I expected to happen, but then the annoying whining would kick in. I took some readings the other day after the battery install and this i swhat I got

Engine off, all lights off=12.41 volts
Engine running all accessories off and unpluged=14.10 to 14.16 volts
engine running with accessories on=14.10volts
engine running with accessories on and reverse lights on (including reverse fogs)=jumps to13, but goes right back to 14.7
almost stalling while in reverse=13.XX volts

Dose this look like normal voltage to anyone?

Yeah, it looks normal, except that spill with the reverse lights... Probably those loose clamps on the battery.

I hover around 14 volts just driving along. 13.8 with all the lights (there are 6 of them) and down to 13.3 with all lights on and idling for a long time (lighting up the blind fold run at AW).

But now the whining is gone  . What battery did ya end up going with?

The whining could be a bearing in the alternator starting to go. Perhaps the new battery needs less alternator output and so has a reduced load on the bearing.

THe voltages look okm but hard to say about that sudden drop to 13 - I would expect that from a heavy load like a rear defrost.

Seems to be all good for now. Took off all the grounds for the fogs today and cleaned them up and sanded the connections. I also fired some elec. grease on all the connections. No more whine, keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks guys. ;)
