2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
Today, I replaced one of those wonderful "sealed, maintenance free" hub-bearing assemblies for the fourth time (Dec. 2007 - Apr. 2015 = 7y 4mo). Each side has had it's original and then two others.
Has anyone else experienced this failure rate?
Is there something I might be doing wrong?
Driving habit? (on-road or off-road)
Installation of hub/bearing?
Pre-offroading care?
Post-offroading care?
Voodoo?

What brand did you buy when you replaced the OE hubs?

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
Moog is warrantied for 3 years. I'll be dealing with that this time. (Going through receipts now.)
Is Moog junk?
Is there any other variable also worth considering?

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
I am not sure how these assemble - large nut on the end of the CV axle? If so, over torqueing could cause premature failure.

The torque spec is 101 lb.ft; I think I'm good there. I admit, I didn't use a torque wrench, but it takes lots of leverage or lots of effort to go beyond that. I didn't "Give'r" as they say.Bow_Tied wrote:I am not sure how these assemble - large nut on the end of the CV axle? If so, over torqueing could cause premature failure.
Thanks for the idea though.

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
I think the originals held up for about 7 years and 150,000km. I don't think there's much you can do to extend their life, but I do believe heavy tires, knobby tires and wheeling (impact and jarring) did shorten their life. Suspension failure or severe miss-alignment could cause rapid failure.

How long was your ratchet or johnson-bar? You might be surprised at how little mechanical advantage is required. For your next set be sure to torque them to eliminate this variable. When installing did you lubricate the threads for that nut?

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
I am on my second set of hubs and have one on the out again. That might be due to the heat I needed to use to get a seized cv out of it

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
I have noticed a drop in the quality of moog parts, I have replaced the moog ball joints on my truck 3 times.
I usually buy timken or SKF bearings.

My Johnson is a significant member, but I was gentle and some lube was used.Bow_Tied wrote:How long was your ratchet or johnson-bar? You might be surprised at how little mechanical advantage is required. For your next set be sure to torque them to eliminate this variable. JMOXtrapol8 wrote:

(You set that up deliberately, right?)

Nissan's eat wheel bearings for lunch. I've seen them go as low as 30,000km

First gen was not bad. Second gen I hear are the pits. So much for technical advancement and welcome to the age of disposability :p

My pathy still has the original wheel bearings at 21 years old, but then again, you can take them apart and lube them.

Re: 2nd Gen Hub/Bearing Replacement
Cup and cone bearings needed more maintenance but lasted much longer.
