Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
Josh - that is something to think about - I didn't know that Jeep had a CRD in that era. I would only consider an '08 or older to avoid the eurea injection or whatever it is called I think. I need to research this. And check to see if my wife would accept a diesel "school bus" as the article calls it.
I'd love a Benz ML, my buddy has an '08 350 Bluetec, beautiful. I don't think that if I could afford to buy one I could afford to maintain it. He had a front shock replaced: $1500 he said.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
I'm of the exact opposite opinion on urea. Diesel engines pre ~2008 are efficient and reliable power-plants unencumbered by restrictive filters and excessive exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), diesel engines from the ~2008-2012 era are equipped with restrictive filters and choked with excessive EGR...I will never buy a vehicle with a diesel of this design..., and the latest diesels allow the engine to operate as it should without recirculating excessive amounts of exhaust gas into the motor and reduce emissions by treating the exhaust with urea. For example the Cummins 5.9 engine is bullet proof and efficient, then the 6.7 came along in 2008 with increased EGR and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) fuel consumption went up and reliability went down, in 2013 they added urea and cut down the EGR to get lower emissions, regain efficiency and improve power. The same example can be given for the generations of the Duramax 6.6, and Powerstroke 7.3(great)-6.0(unreliable)-6.4(inefficient)-6.7(excellent).
As for the 3.0 Mercedes diesel and the 3.2 VM Motori (EcoDiesel) diesel I'd research each year heavily. If you find out that one year of the 3.0 has no DPF or urea that would be my pick, but if your choice is excessive EGR or urea I'd pick urea everyday.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
Clearly you know a lot more than I do on the topic. I don't care much about fuel economy. I am considering much worse. I do care about complicated maintenance I require a dealer for. So if a later diesel is better for that then I'd look at this. There are a lot of cherokee diesel like you linked on the market for what seem to be reasonable prices. Maybe there's a reason. I need more data.

Oh and Romey: sorry if I ranted in your direction, I meant no disrespect. Just b*tch about my first world problems. I really have it pretty good. Just the usual wishing for what I can't easily get.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
From my perspective the urea injection is a relatively simple system that is entirely, or nearly entirely, external to the engine. This is opposed to the previous generations that feed large amounts of exhaust gases to the intake side of the engine (EGR). This took diesel particulate, oil, soot, etc from the 'dirty' exhaust side and dumped it into the 'clean' intake side. If you look into the reliability issues of these engines are related to the EGR system itself or all the 'crap' it feeds into the engine.Bow_Tied wrote:Clearly you know a lot more than I do on the topic. Side note - For many reasons, one being that is illegal to modify the emission systems on a vehicle, you cannot add urea to an older diesel to replace the EGR and you cannot delete the EGR and the DPF. If you delete the EGR and DPF you can see fines of $5,000 or more and a order to return it to original configuration. Therefore when looking at the domestic heavy trucks the 2008-2012 6.7 ISB Cummins, 2008-2011 6.6 LMM Duramax, and 2008-2010 6.4 Powerstroke are frankly trucks that should not be purchased. This is a big concern for someone like myself, pre 2008 trucks are generally to old for me to consider and looking at the current generations is too expensive.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
Thanks josh. I'm in a spot where I don't want high mileage (I'd accept 100k km). But don't have budget for anything newer than 5-6 years old. That might preclude a diesel purchased for me unless I'd be willing to look at something like the Cherokee you linked. Apparently annual egr cleaning is recommended as well as some mod to a swirl motor which I have not yet figured out what that is. Otherwise these seem solid.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
I need to get my wife to drive one. I think she will find it too big. She loves her pathy but doesn't want anything bigger. Full size certainly opens the towing options.
The challenge is getting my wife into any rig without the yard apes in tow.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
I was being a smart ass actually because this thread has covered many vehicles I thought I'd start over again. Get her to try one out. My wife was intimidated at first but in a short while she loved to drive it.Bow_Tied wrote:I need to get my wife to drive one. I think she will find it too big. If that was closer, and I was in the market, that would be damn tempting!

Not a bad price. I suspect it will sell before I can see it. :/

The manifolds are garbage. That they crack is bad, that the catalytic is know to fail in a way that the engine ingests the material is a lack of diligence and due care in the design.
Ok guys - more details please. How common is this issue? How is it preventable - what maintenance??Morpheus wrote:Ya, they're manicat's. Same thing tho, lack of maintenance is generally the reason they go.
It is coming down to me liking the '08 LE w/5.6L or an Envoy/9-7x with a 5.3L. The Envoy is known to eat front wheel bearings and has other usual GM issues of the era. But it is going to be a tad cheaper to buy, a LOT better in fuel economy with the displacement on demand for highway driving and has more second row room for adults (though that is a minor priority). I like the pathy has a reverse camera but also has a NASA control panel for a radio and the rear A/C lines seem to be a common fail that is $$$.

Re: Tell me about the 5.6L engines
Manifolds are only good for 100,000km. I went through the originals and the set that replaced them under warranty. All the 5.6 manifolds fail, period it's a JOKE, and they will continue to fail until replaced with aftermarket long tube headers, which requires custom tuning. Look at the Titans on thus forum: mine failed twice, Nismojunkie's failed, Lookzcustoms' failed, Jibber's may have as well.
Long tube headers and UpRev tuning is fix. Its $1000 if you can do the install yourself, double that if you can't.
Probably swap the rad out for an aluminum CSF as well, the rads are known to fail.
Wheel bearings may fail on the Nissan too. Not too expensive to replace.
