Re: Block Heater/Coolant Heater
Ah, but you pay more delivery if you use less electricity. Apparently it's cheaper to use MORE electricity because they reduce the overly expensive delivery charges And we're not repaying the debt anymore, that's been paid off. Now we're paying for the Wind Turbines that they spent a tonne of money on and haven't put up yet. That's right, we're paying off generators that are in storage and not generating.
Also: a 400W Block heater draws 3.3 amps (Wattage = Voltage x Current ∴ Wattage/Voltage = Current ∴ 400/120=3.333~) so you can run a couple and still have plenty of space on your breaker, but if it's an excessively long run from your panel to your garage (100+') I'd be a little leery of the gauge of wiring.

Re: Block Heater/Coolant Heater
Gotta love Dalton; we'll be paying for his decisions for decades.
Its only a 200W magnetic oil pan heater. I decided to put it on the block to heat the coolant, I don't care if the oil gets cold, I am not starting that engine until May, just want the coolant to not freeze. SO I have that and one block heater and my soffit pot lights and block heater on the other breaker.
I would LOVE to dig up the service to the garage and run a proper 220V 60A out there. Maybe Someday. When it's warmer. Wind chill is a little nipply here.

A real man would be out there today, in the -30*, with a pick-axe, digging a trench for his new electrical line.... But not More Ron. Nope. He's inside, surfing the web, sipping apple juice from his sippy cup....

Re: Block Heater/Coolant Heater
***UPDATE***
So I had the truck plugged in last night (battery and block heater), around midnight. This morning, at about 7, it was -25 degrees centigrade.
Hopped in the truck looked at the gauges before starting her. Battery was at 12.4VDC, and the coolant was at 10 degrees. She started like a beaut! Coolant dipped to 7 as it got circulated, but that was only for a few seconds.
I should have been doing this YEARS ago!

Nice! Mine was similar this morning though it still started slowly.medic wrote:***UPDATE***

Re: Block Heater/Coolant Heater
I still don't have a block heater (they want over 50 dollars for one for mine!) and mine starts perfectly without it in all temps. Although I would rather have one but if its lasted 20 years without....

Go with something like this. Easy install, works as good or better.adamzan wrote:I still don't have a block heater (they want over 50 dollars for one for mine!) and mine starts perfectly without it in all temps. Although I would rather have one but if its lasted 20 years without....

I bought this from ebay today. I think I'm suppose to stick it to the oil pan underneath. I don't have a timer setup, so I'm just gonna plug it in few hours before I leave the house. The pathfinder had a weak start in -24C today. New battery, but old starter that I'm guessing maybe on its way out too.

I have this one http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/autom ... 3203p.html I got a number of years ago. Just remember to remove it every trip, the magnet wouldn't hold crossing rough roads etc.dududuckling wrote:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1284930978
