Question on Scan Gauge...

Post by Scotto »

I was thinking the other day (yeah, I know, stop laughing) and was wondering if using a scan gauge might put the ECU into limp mode. I was just wondering, cause when you plug into the ECU, doesn't it think it's in diagnostic mode? And if this is the case, could the scan gauge be screwing around with the ECU and robbing power from the engine?

Just a thought. Anyone have any ideas on this? Or is it a retarded thought, and I should just go back to drinking beer in the garage?

I hope not, mine's plugged in all the time. I cut a friggin' hole in my dash for it...

I would think if it does flip it into diagnostic mode that, that would be different than limp mode. I think it's just monitoring the ecu's parameters. It can't write anything to the ecu so I don't see how it can force it into a limp mode.

I know I still make full boost with mine on, I think in limp mode it's limited at 2psi or something.

Yeah - I think you're right. Limp mode means the truck is limping - limited to 35 Kph or something...

So maybe not limp mode, but diagnostic mode or something. I always have mine plugged in, too. It's just that some guy a while back mentioned something or other and now I am wondering...

People run OBDII interfaces for real-time system/performance monitoring...would defeat the purpose of that was the case.

Cool.

That was my thought, initially there Michael, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for clarifying this.

I have run my scan guage for months at a time with no ill effect. It's a GM though, so that may not mean much. Hmm, maybe I should be back in the garage for beers too.

Mine has been plugged just about daily in since the day i bought it years ago.
I'd say not an issue. in two different cars i have never felt a loss of anything.
