GRRR - broken timing belt!!!!

Post by grant »

Yes, I know I haven't been around here much lately, so much so that many of you newbies don't know me!

The timing belt is broken on my 2000 X!!!!

One of the problems with not working in the industry is that I no longer have free labor, which means I either have to turn wrenches for a change or pay someone to do it. Given that automotive media doesn't pay all that much, I'm leaning towards doing it myself!

Fortunately, it broke at idle. I'm praying that I can get away with just a belt!

Awe man, that sucks! How many KMs on the truck/belt?

Here's praying you got REALLY fortunate and didn't bend any of your valves. Those tend to get expensive!

Truck has something like 260,0000 on it. I bought it at about 200. I had one of my techs at Subaru start into replacing it, but when he got the cover off, the belt looked new so he didn't replace it. Like I said, it happened at idle, so I'm hoping the luck gods are smiling.

Good luck. You've probably got a 50/50 chance of no valve damage if it happened at idle. The job of replacing the belt itself is not too hard. Just take your time.

The tech should NEVER assume something in terms of a timing belt. He should know better. I've done 8-9 timing belts on various VG motors and many of them have appeared new even though they were factory original after 160,000+ kms

Would a compression test (with and without oil in the cylinder) be enough to check for bent valves? If not any way of telling without pulling the heads off?

I have two used timing belts in my garage. Both do not show much wear...the teeth are fine and there is no cracking. Makes you wonder if replacing them was necessary until you hear about the belt breaking :o
