trany swap
an opportunity has presented itself to me a 93 pathy in much better condition then mine(body, frame) but needs a trany
it is an auto and mine is a stick
so here's the Q. how hard is it to change an auto to a manual

Re: trany swap
Well, you should already have all the things that you need from your current truck (Ie. donor parts and such).keith wrote:an opportunity has presented itself to me a 93 pathy in much better condition then mine(body, frame) but needs a trany

The main issue is getting the parts to go from Auto to Manual, getting the pedal and all that jazz, but you have that already.
It's doable, that's for sure!

Re: trany swap
yup, don't forget to get a good external transmission cooler. I think you can use ones from early 90's explorers or just go buy a new one for $75 or $80

Re: trany swap
oh wait a minute, i thought you wanted to put the auto in the manual, not the other way around.
in that case, you can use the ECU from the automatic with your manual transmission, but not vice versa

Re: trany swap
nope...no need. The Auto tranny has some ECU parameters....the 5 speed has nothing.

Re: trany swap
Ok after you stopped by my place yesterday, I did some digging for you.
Q-"I've got a 90 hardbody with an auto. If I put a manual in will I need to change the computer and wiring harness?"
A1-"I dont think so. I know a few people that just did this. Another this week. You can swap ecus if you want. The harness is the same."
A2-"I could be wrong, but I didn't think an ECU change would be needed. IIRC, an auto tranny ECU can be used for a manual, but not a manual ECU in an auto."
And so on. From what other people that have done the swap say you don't need to swap the ECU or the wiring harness. You can swap just the ECU, as the harnesses are the same.
Here is a good swap thread for you to read:

Re: trany swap
Why don't you sell your truck and use the money to just get an auto tranny for the other truck?
Or are you stuck on wanting it stick?
Or are you stuck on wanting it stick?

Re: trany swap
AFAIK the 5 spd has better lower gearing and has less drag on the motor.
Here is a thread on doing it to an R50, most of the steps should be similiar:

Hey Jay,
Are you referring to the diff gearing? Autos have lower gearing than 5 spds (the norm is 4.3x stick vs 4.6x auto), but there are a few 5spds out there with 4.6x.
But now that I re-read your post, you're probably talking about the 5spd tranny lower gearing eh?
