Front tow hooks attached to your frame, and a must is a trailer hitch. That will get you started, and may be all you ever need. ;)

I won't bother posting up a pic of an Xterra with a trailer hitch, I am sure you have seen that a million times. You should already have a factory tow hook up front. Go to PA and buy another and attach it on the other side for better options for front recovery.

And shackles are available at Princess Auto for about $5-$10 each depending on the size.

Where would he attach these to on a stock X? I never had problems putting recovery straps on my front hooks, and had a shackle receiver for my hitch.

The strap can get caught on the hook in the front. It's sometimes easier to hook the strap to the shackle, then the shackle to the hook.

The factory hook isnt a closed type, so any backing up it can slip/fall off shackle or not. But yes I have seen someone show up with one Mother of a strap, and I poked a hole in it with my hook ( sorry Gino but show up with a strap worthy of recovering a dump truck and get stuck, whats a brotha supposed to do?). PA sells something similar like this type of front tow hook that has that spring finger to keep the strap in and off the hook.

Yeah, I think PA one of those is a two bolt 10,000pound one and is black. PA also has a sold cast hook that fits directly in a trailer hitch receiver (2") and is rated higher, but it is $40.

Yeah, the recovery hooks that go into the receiver are okay, but they have the same shortcomings as the front recovery hooks. For $40, your better off to throw in a few more dollars to get the receiver shackle as posted above.

My post was more just a suggestion on where to buy them and how much they cost.

As far as where to attach them; I assume the front of the Xterra is basically the same as the Frontier except the Frontier didn't come with any hooks so this has been my solution:

The point shown is designed to secure the vehicle while being shipped on a transport vessel, and is not rated for recovery purposes. It can handle some pull, but if stressed to much, will fail.

As mentioned, the best thing is a trailer hitch for rearward recovery. For front recovery, frame fastened recovery points are the best.

I looked at it and figured it's way more than what you'd ever need simply for shipping. It's a decent size and is welded to the frame in several places. Clearly it's not the ideal solution, but I've seen others do this as well. Has anyone ever seen this fail?

I'd love to see what others are using. I've got a couple of tow hooks sitting in my garage that I want to use but I can't decide where to install them.

I used that spot previously too, with no adverse affects, but Medic is right, they are tie downs, not recovery points.

That said, just below them, on the bottom of the frame is where my ARB bumper is mounted on my Pathy. The difference between the frames on the Frontier/Xterra of your generation are very similar, so I wonder if there's bolt holes there that could be used to mount tow hooks?

Although my X is stock, I so far have found that it actually ample ground clearance. the one thing that always seems to get in the way is my receiver. As much as a receiver-mounted shackle is a good idea, i'd hit that even more. I think I need a Benderbuilt bumper

Hitting the receiver, for anyone who's wheeled with one for any length of time, seems to become a welcome feeling/sound, due to familiarity, and knowing you're not hurting anything.

The receiver shackle won't make that much of a difference, to be honest.

these are the points that we (tow trucks) winch cars/trucks out of the ditch( or where ever they end up) they are one of the strongest points to winch from as you are not bending/breaking something(eg. brake lines / bumpers / suspension parts)

I bet that shipping tie down will work without failure for a long long time if used with little side pull, those gussets look beefy, although I'd to see it in person. I bet what ever shortcomings it has could be remedied with an additional gusset or brace.

Those gussets have little to nothing to do with the tie down. They're for the body mount above the tie down.

The tie down is welded to the gussets along with the frame. However it extends down below the gussets and that's where you'd lose strength. I agree, you could easily make them permanent recovery points simply by welding in some additional bracing. Sounds like a project to review at the club Ron.
