The whining could be a bearing in the alternator starting to go. Perhaps the new battery needs less alternator output and so has a reduced load on the bearing.
THe voltages look okm but hard to say about that sudden drop to 13 - I would expect that from a heavy load like a rear defrost.

The higher octanr fuel allows the computer to take advantage of a more aggressive engine timing for more power, better fuel economy. Engines with variable valve timing I think would be able to run a tighter sequence too. I run mid grade in my 02 without issue, lots use 87.
